“A Players” or “A Positions”?: The Strategic Logic of Workforce Management (2 minute read)

As a Leader or Coach, it's imperative to guide your organization or clients toward a more strategic, role-focused approach to workforce management.  It's not just about having superstar employees; it's about placing them where they can truly shine. This light read, Published in Harvard Business Review, flips the script on traditional talent management.

The Real Game Changer: It’s all about matching your top talent with the roles that are crucial to your strategy. Think of it as putting your best players in the positions where they can make the biggest plays. This isn’t just about having skilled people; it’s about leveraging those skills in the right places to push your organization forward.

The Strategy: Ditch the old "all about the player" mindset. Instead, focus on identifying those key positions - the "A positions" - that really drive your strategy. Then, make sure your best talent is in those spots. This shift means you're not just collecting talent; you're deploying it strategically to hit your goals harder.

The Payoff: By aligning your star players with the roles where they can make the most impact, you not only boost your organization's effectiveness but also sharpen your competitive edge. It’s about making smarter, not just harder, moves.

The Bottom Line: This approach offers a fresh playbook for business coaches, leaders, and anyone ready to rethink talent management. Aligning your workforce with your strategic goals isn’t just good practice; it’s a winning strategy for sustainable success.

Dive into this concept and start aligning your talent with your strategic goals to see real change in your organization's performance and competitive stance.

 'AI Automation Contest'

Here's an exciting opportunity to improve your business processes using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and others.

We've had the pleasure of helping several clients execute the COACH.WIN 'AI Automation Contest', and the results have been amazing!

Each client has uncovered 50+ ideas for improvement, including simple toggles and apps that can be enabled, process improvements, roadblocks identified, and internal training on existing software.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Identify a 'Champion' who will announce the contest & remind the team daily for the length of the contest.
  2. Offer rewards for entries (eg, 10 to 20 $50 gift certificates). Each submission gets team members into the contest, with a random drawing.
  3. The goal is to drive at least 50 ideas for improvement.
  4. COACH.WIN will create instructions and a custom link (Example) to help team members understand what is possible.
  5. Run the contest for 10-15 business days.
  6. We compile results and schedule a meeting to review findings.
  7. Pick 2 to 5 submissions to get started on your AI journey.

The stats for Copilot are incredible - it can make processes 25%-100% faster and improve quality by 40%.  The surprise outcome was that this contest identified opportunities for training on current software.

Harnessing the Power of Scorecards: A Game-Changer in Goal Achievement

Imagine walking into a room, knowing exactly where you need to be but without a map to guide you. That’s how many professionals, even the most successful ones, navigate their careers and targets — with ambition but without direction. This is where the transformative power of scorecards comes into play, not as a tool for reprimand, but as a compass for success.

Take the story of a top-tier salesperson skeptical about the introduction of scorecards in their routine. The fear? That these indicators would serve as a pretext for punitive measures or tough conversations. However, this perspective took a turn when the salesperson realized that scorecards aren’t a stick — they’re a rallying cry for support and celebration.

A scorecard is akin to a private wish-list of cities you yearn to explore. Without disclosing the destinations or desires, you ask someone to help you get there. The task seems insurmountable because the helper is in the dark, unaware of whether to book a flight to Omaha or a train to NYC. This analogy breaks down the essence of scorecards — they provide clarity on the destination and the journey, enabling others to aid you effectively.

In the realm of business, scorecards illuminate personal and team goals. They quantify what success looks like, whether it’s acquiring new clients or advancing skill sets. Think of it as bowling with the lanes as your objectives. You aim for the pins — your targets. Sometimes, you strike; other times, you’re headed for the gutter. But with a scorecard, your team knows when to raise the bumpers, guiding you back on course and celebrating with you when you hit the mark.

A compelling example underscores their significance. Amid the pandemic, a client had lost touch with his key customers, only to rediscover the value of consistent check-ins when a simple meeting led to three new business opportunities. His scorecard now includes a biannual touchpoint with his top 50 clients, a strategic reminder that ensures he’s always on the path to victory.

Scorecards should be viewed as a manifestation of help and celebration — a strategic tool to identify when you might be veering off course and when to rally the team to aid in realignment, and equally, to rejoice in the shared success.

Encourage your teams to shift their perspective on scorecards. They are not the harbinger of criticism but the blueprint for achievement. By adopting this tool, every member can visualize what winning looks like and how they can collectively and individually reach those triumphant moments, one score at a time.
